With the March 1 exemption filing deadline in the rearview mirror and the warmer spring months on the horizon, I am grateful for my team’s hard work during our busiest time of the year. We kicked off 2023 with a busy season of community events and media appearances to help spread the word about homestead exemption and the other valuable property tax exemptions our office administers.

Tallahassee has been buzzing as state legislators converged in the Capitol to carry out their annual legislative duties. As in previous years, I worked with fellow elected property appraisers to support sensible property tax legislation and advocate for taxpayers. I am especially proud to be working with veterans and legislators to expand tax savings for veterans who are totally and permanently disabled.

I am also proud to unveil our new mission statement, which better defines our approach to public service:

"To provide our community with accurate assessments, exceptional service, and a commitment to public trust."

This statement will guide our efforts in performing our duty to prepare a fair and equitable tax roll over the coming months. Our team is just one call or visit away, so please reach out if there’s anything we can do for you.

THE BUYER'S CHECKOFF LIST

  • File for your homestead exemption! This may save you hundreds of dollars each year. You can file online, just click here.

  • There are other exemptions that may save you money. Visit our Exemptions page for more details.

  • If you previously filed homestead within the state of Florida, you may be eligible for additional savings. When filing for your homestead exemption, remember to file a Portability application.

  • Get an estimate of your property taxes. Do not assume the taxes from the previous owner will be the same for you; a change in ownership may reset the assessed value to the full market value, this could result in higher property taxes. Search for your parcel to access our tax estimator tool or call our office at (850) 606-6200.

  • Akin,

I have been in Leon Co government (Sheriff's office) for the past 23 years and the customer service I just experienced with my call to your office was A+ and the best I've seen.

Thank you for your help Curt.

  • Akin,

Curt Chisolm and Dan were very helpful answering my questions in reference to the calculation of the square footage of my home. Your office did exactly what they said they would do and were very prompt with all communication.

As a business owner, I really appreciate great customer service and was pleasantly surprised by these gentlemen and how they took care of my issue. I just wanted to say thank you for a job very well done!

  • Leslie, Ken and Valencia,

  • Good afternoon Ms. Scott,

It was such a pleasure meeting you at the Lenders' Consortium Home Buyer Class on March 18th. As I mentioned to you in our conversation, it's not often that you find someone with the customer service skills that you presented to the potential homebuyers. You came from a position of contribution which always makes the reception of the information better. As a resident of Leon, I was enlightened by a lot of the information you presented during this session. Keep up the good work! It's appreciated!!!

  • Dear Mr. Akinyemi:

I want to take a moment to tell you of a most amazing experience I had at your office today. Deanne Holder waited on me and my daughter, Kelley DiSalvo, as we were trying to make heads or tails of some small pieces of property that belonged to my deceased husband, John Pat Krause, and me. Some of the lots were in low land and one piece of property didn't even have an address, except the address of the next door neighbor. Deanne very, very patiently looked up each and every parcel and helped us see the adjoining property owners so we can contact them, where needed, and also take the necessary steps to finally dispose of the remaining lots. I can see that Deanne is a treasure to your office and the citizens of Leon County.

on the way out of the building, my daughter and I were commenting on the wonderful service, when another one of your employees, Valencia Scott, kindly helped us with an email address where I could send this message. Thank you for your wisdom in hiring top notch employees!

  • Dear Mr. Akinyemi:

I just wanted to let you know how helpful Mike Nichols was in helping us through a complicated situation in a real estate transaction where a tax certificate had been sold on the subject property. He went above and beyond the call of duty, patiently explaining the situation separately to all three parties involved. The issue was resolved with his help and his response was excellent.

Thank you for running such a great office.

  • Good morning Akin! Idk how closely you work with the staff, but I called up to your office this morning and spoke with a Brett and he was OUTSTANDING! The knowledge and customer service was just wonderful.... especially on a gloomy Monday morning. If you know him, please share my gratitude for his service today.

  • Mr. Akinyemi

I am very grateful for the informative response I received from Ms. Poskey. I was lost without the information she provided.

  • Mr. Akinyemi

I just wanted her superiors to know how patient, kind and helpful she was with me. I’m feeling poorly this morning and have a hard time hearing, I was so stressed. So many times, people aren’t courteous and don’t give the service they should, but she was so patient with me and so helpful. She was superb and so was her service.

  • So nice and kind!!! Wish everyone I dealt with was so thorough and punctual.

  • In spite of the fact that I should have been dealing with the Tax Collector's Office, and she could easily have just told me that and brushed me off, Meghan Poskey helped me navigate through the Leon County website until I had the data I needed. You are lucky to have her in your office, and I was lucky to get her to help me. It was even very late in the day on a Friday, and she just stayed with me until the job was done.

  • This past week; I was able to interact with a Mr. James Dantley and a Mr. Curt Chisholm by phone and email and I have to say that from my initial call; they were expedient and professional with both information and courtesy. As a veteran, I enjoy these types of interactions and I hope at least one supervisor or leader in your department lets these gentlemen know that they are appreciated.

  • Thank you so much, Beth Garrett. You are a wealth of information and very helpful.

  • Shirley,

Wow you are fantastic! Thank you so much for your efficiency and going through extra mile to provide helpful information! That is super rare these days. Please let your supervisor know I appreciate your help!
